Show our new home. Dora returned soon to California, and June stayed to finalize Jennie's business and to visit with us. RETURNING to WORK I soon realized with added expenses that we needed financial help, and I considered finding work. I didn't want to return to my profession in cosmetology because of the long hours each day. I wanted to be home with my boys when they came home from school. So I decided to go to the Ogden City School District and put my name in as a lunchroom worker at nearby Horace Mann Elementary. After I had applied, I thought I had better check with my heart doctor about this kind of work, and he said, "No, not for you." So I thought no more of that and felt I had better get things arranged in our new home. Then I was surprised when Maxine Marshall called me to ask if I would be interested in part-time work. She was the lunchroom manager at Bonneville Elementary. She explained that she and her assistant would be there early every morning to prepare the hot meal for the children at noon, and she said I would come in later in the morning to serve the food and help in other ways. I thought I would try that work in that I would not have to lift the heavy pans, and I would be home when my sons came from school. BONNEVILLE and HORACE MANN SCHOOLS At Bonneville, I helped where needed in preparing the lunch food for the children. We lunchroom workers had time to have our lunch first before the children entered. I was very pleased to be acquainted with my co-workers. One was Violet Rawson whom I had known before as a visiting teaching companion in the 7th Ward. Maxine was called and asked if she could spare a worker for part-time work at Horace Mann, and so I accepted work there. At Horace Mann, I found Margaret Read, the manager, and all of the ladies to be very pleasant and enjoyable. At this time, Horace Mann had more students than any other elementary in the district. Margaret was very capable and made the food most appealing in looks, good quality, and nutrition for the children. Her assistant was Lillian McFarland Jones. Other steady lunch workers were Nell Osmond, Thelma Saxton, Gladys Ericson, Maurene Jackson, and Joyce Dorigatti, who eventually became the assistant to Margaret. Others who worked there for a short time included Lillian Cutler and Dora Garrard. Glenn Thomas was principal for many years and then was transferred to another school. Mr. Thomas very often sat with us as we ate, and we all had many pleasant conversations together. |
