Show GUESTS ALWAYS WELCOMED When I was a child, relatives from out of Ogden would gather at Mother and Dad's home at 1208 Porter on Memorial Day or before and after funeral services. After a visit, they would stay for dinner. Our home was always a welcome, central gathering place. On special occasions, my sister and I would have cousins Dora Gibson, Donna Forsgren, and Guinevere Hess at our relative gatherings. Across (west of our home) was a large field and pasture where one of our neighbors kept cows and horses to graze. My sister Ida and I had one playmate who lived close, Charlotte (Lottie) White (Pearce). She was an only child. We spent many enjoyable hours playing together. EARLY MEMORY As I think back on my childhood, it seems one of my first memories was spending much of my time in a small rocking chair. I was bothered by bronchitis. I was rather frail in health during my childhood. I experienced pain. My parents gave me packets of powder which were dissolved in water. This was for rheumatism. When I was in my late teens, each time I was examined by a doctor, he would say I had had rheumatic fever. I know I didn't eat some foods as I should have as I was finicky about my menu. My older brothers enjoyed the vegetables and dinners mother prepared and homemade mustard pickles and various foods that I didn't eat. One time when Aunt Jennie Farley Gibson and her daughter Dora were caring for Grandpa Isaac Farley at his home next door, she invited me to dinner. Along with her menu, she served creamed carrots, which I ate because I did not want to offend her by leaving them on the plate. From then on, carrots became one of my favorite vegetables. I did not enjoy pickled red beets, nor sauerkraut, nor buttermilk. But as time went on, I learned to enjoy all of these foods. Since childhood, my favorite food was new milk with Mother's delicious whole-wheat homemade bread. To this day, my Sister Ida and I often say, "Wouldn't it be great if we could get fresh milk to enjoy with 100% whole-wheat bread!" MARRIOTT REUNIONS Social activities I recall as a child were centered around families and relatives. My sister Ida and I attended with Dad and Mother the Marriott Family Reunions held annually on March 6th, Grandfather John Marriott's birthday, in honor of this pioneer who settled the area north of Ogden and west on 12th Street. This reunion was held in the Marriott LDS Ward Meetinghouse Recreation Hall. The relatives looked forward to |
