Show for herself over her youthful years. She was an artist in embroidery and other handwork such as knitting. Ida always admired beautiful wearing apparel. As the new styles came, she would adapt her apparel. She has always dressed well for the occasion. IDA and the PIANO When Ida was in her late teens, she realized that to be able to play piano by notes and not just by ear would be to her advantage when accompanying soloists and reading orchestrations for the various bands. When Frederic Dixon moved to Ogden, she arranged to take lessons from him. He had been on the concert stage, but had to retire due to eye problems. He had a select group of students he taught in Ogden, and later he taught in Salt Lake City. Ida was happy to spend hours of time each day in practice. He presented her in recitals in the Hotel Ben Lomond's Crystal Ballroom. Sometimes he would present her and another fine student, Elmer Aaron. These were happy and fulfilling days for Ida. On many occasions Frederic was invited to our parent's home for dinner. After dinner he would play for us which was indeed most enjoyable for all in attendance. This excellent training has helped Ida progress in her musical abilities over the years. Frederic said if he could have taught Ida at a younger age, she could have become a concert pianist. Ida has always been an excellent student at school and at Weber College. While attending Ogden High School, the students urged her to play dance numbers during the lunch period, and the students would enjoy dancing. This was held in the gym where she would play requests without any printed music. At Weber College, Professor Roland Parry chose her to accompany for the choral groups. She received a music scholarship from him. It seems everything Ida did, she did well. She is an excellent cook. She has always been interested in good nutrition and this has aided her posture, stature, and has helped her look years younger than her age. A third visit to California was in January 1929. Mother, my sister Ida, Aunt Ida Ferrin, and I were invited by Arnold Ferrin and his wife, Ellen, to go in his car for about a two-week trip to visit relatives. We left Ogden when the snow was covered with dirt. What a glorious sight to see sunny California with its palm trees and enjoy the nights with the sparkling lights of a big city. That same year I entered Weber College. In the WORLD of WORK During spring quarter, I decided to take work at Woolworths located on the west side of Washington Boulevard |
