Show HOW I MET MY HUSBAND For this activity, Wayne called his cousin, Vern, to see if he would care to attend the dance on a blind date with me. Vern said that he would. Vera Harper was one of the girls in the group who lived close by my home. She had a date with Leslie Norton. We met as a group to attend the dance and exchanged dances with one another. This was a very enjoyable occasion. After the dance ended, a few couples, including Vern and myself, took a ride through Ogden Canyon. On the way back, Vern asked if we could have a date on Sunday. I told him that I did not date on Sundays as I attended Sacrament Meeting, and I invited him to attend Church with me. He said that he would, and he did. Thereafter followed many dates. Incidentally, Vern never had any difficulty getting a date. One time while attending a movie at the Orpheum Theater, he introduced me to Chelles Rackham whom Vern had dated at one time. She was the daughter of our city commissioner. VERN'S TALENTS AND QUALITIES I was very impressed with Vern for his gentlemanly good manners, and he dressed so neatly. I was attracted to my future husband by his clean appearance, good looks, and his jovial personality. He had blond wavy hair, blue eyes, and a pleasing personality. When I introduced him to the family, they were all pleased with him. He was accepted by my parents, brothers, sister, and other relatives and welcomed at our family gatherings. In that he played trumpet and my sister Ida played the piano, many enjoyable hours were spent at our house with Vern and Ida playing music. Sometimes my cousin, Vivian Gibson, who played the sax, joined in, too. It was easy to see that Vern deeply enjoyed music. Vern also had a clever sense of humor, and anyone that we were with enjoyed being around him. In that Vern was playing in dance orchestras from age 15 on, we usually dated on those nights he was not playing (unless I wanted to sit and listen to the music and watch others who were dancing). Mondays were our day to date. We would take in a show and then have refreshments afterwards at the sweet shop up 25th Street near the White City. During this period of time, there were several places where we could go with groups of friends--the Hot Springs, Lagoon, the Berthana Dance Hall, the White City Ballroom, and Saltair. I'll tell about each of them. Hot Springs was located west of Pleasant View by the Weber County and Box Elder County line. We could enjoy the warm mineral baths. Streetcars ran out to this area. Lagoon was a well-known resort consisting of beautiful flowers and plants in the summertime, a picnic area, a bathing |
