Show This section features some of the notes and letters Madeleine wrote and received. They are in chronological order-In her very young years, Madeleine received this note from her Grandmother Madeleine Malan Farley: "I send you another story for your Mama to read to you in place of a written letter, and you may think it is a letter from Grandma. I hope you will like the story as my letter, if so, I may send you another. Now, be a good girl to Mama and sister Ida, and then you will see me before long-for I long to see you and all the rest of the folks. I guess you will have grown considerably in my absence. And I can see you in my mind doing all you can to help Mama do the work for she always has so much to do especially now when she is housekeeping. For work is what makes little girls growmore than play." Good-bye from Grandma M. Farley Also in her youth, Mother received this original poem by her Aunt Jennie Farley Gibson: To Madeleine and Ida-Dear Girls, You'll never, never know What honor on me you bestow. The lovely words you say to me I feel that I unworthy must be. There's something in your hearts, you see, That brings the goodness out of me, And if I had that magic power I would be happy every hour. There's love of good that can be done By thinking good of every one, And I will try the best I can To be just what you think I am. Such praises more choice there is no other Than that of being like a Mother. So in my heart with treasure rare Is the thought, "A daughter's love I share." |
