Show Vern wrote Madeleine: "The U. P. Band is going to broadcast next Monday night over the new 1000 watt station KLO." October 7, 1929 MARY MARRIOTT'S APPRECIATION and COUNSEL to MADELEINE "How happy you made me yesterday when the postman brought me a package...such a nice pair of hose. And that nice card with the four last words on the card-you just thrilled me-to me it was the nicest thing I had ever heard. And oh, I must tell you, Vern came to see me Sunday night. We had such a nice visit, and don't worry, Madeleine, he is the same dear boy. He asked about you and we talked about the nice times you two had last summer, and I said, "Never mind, we will have some more when next summer comes." He said. "I hope so, but I am afraid I have too much competition." P.S. "In my haste to get this letter off, I forgot to mention how grateful I was to hear how many of our folks attended Sunday School and Fast Meeting and especially Horace....We all need just such meetings to stimulate us and to turn our thoughts to the things of God, and I want to say that there isn't anything that makes me feel happier than to hear that my children are attending to their duties and are trying to do right...Now I must close with love to the dearest little girl." October 9, 1929 (Note to Reader: One of Madeleine's other suitors was Bingham Nix. He gave her a ride on his motorcycle once. As Vern was approaching the Marriott home to come to visit Madeleine, he saw them returning to the yard. Vern for years afterwards kidded Madeleine about that bike ride. Another person who was much enamored with Madeleine was Howard Ebert who moved to Oregon about 1928). ON THE JOB Madeleine's note: "First day at work in the office of Dr. Frank M. Crosby, Physician and Surgeon, Dr. Faught, Physician, and Dr. A. Roy Frechette, Dentist, as receptionist and bookkeeper in the Cherokee Building, Suites 213-214-215, 6636 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood. My cousin Dora took me there and picked me up. Read in the evening." Mary and Charles sent Madeleine two checks. One was for $200.00 and the other for $175.00 so Horace could start an auto top repair business. October 29,1929 "My brother Horace took me to work this morning. This afternoon, I started to make out statements. Dora called for me after work and took me to school. She brought me a letter form Vern which I was very happy to receive and one from Mother with money for Horace." October 30, 1929 "I came home by myself tonight. Went with June and Aunt Jennie to see the four Marx Brothers in "Coconuts". October 31, 1929 |
