Show "To work. This afternoon I put hot packs on a patient. Very happy to receive a letter from Vern. Read during the evening." November 2, 1929 "We attended Sunday School. This afternoon I spent reading. Tonight we went to Church. While I was writing a letter to Vern, Horace came in, and I had a long talk with him. I got to bed at 10 to 1." November 3, 1929 "Dr. Crosby told me I could go at 1 o' clock. Received a letter and picture from Vern. It was good to get that. Aunt Jennie started to make over my purple hat." November 11, 1929 VERN'S FUTURE CAREER Vern was 21 years old and working as a printer's helper at Ogden Lithograph when he wrote Madeleine who was 20 years old at this time: "I can get work at the printing shops, but they don't pay much, and if you start you have to stay until some miracle happens to get any advancement. The lithography line has more opportunities than printing will ever have. I don't feel as if I would like to be a helper under Bert for seven more years (before becoming a pressman)." Fall 1929 MISSING HIS GIRLFRIEND Ever since Madeleine left the first part of August 1929 to go to California, Vern wrote her that we wanted to come, too. Many advised him that even though a lot of people were moving to California, not all were finding work there. Some suggested he apply for civil service work. But Vern had planned with Madeleine to be with her at Christmas time in Los Angeles. He told his boss that he would be quitting and gave proper time notification of that decision. Mr. Young said he would give Vern a letter of recommendation. Madeleine writes: "A big day at the office. I was in the operating room today while doctors gave a boy seven-years-old Ether and took his adenoids out. I took care of the boy for about 40 minutes after the operation. Then I put packs on a young girl's face. Dr. dictated a letter to me, and I typed and mailed it. Tonight, I was too tired to do anything. Went to bed about 8 p.m. June and Perry were out for the evening, so Aunt Jennie and I were left alone." November 16, 1929 VISITORS FROM HOME Madeleine's Mother, Mary, Sister Ida, Brothers Milton and Orion and Nephew, Richard Lindquist, left Ogden around December 13, 1929 for a visit to Madeleine and other relatives in Los Angeles. So Vern was even more lonely with them gone. He had spent some time visiting the Marriott home especially with Mary and Ida the months while Madeleine was away. |
