Show Madeleine to Vern: "Alfred Creamer from Logan called to see us this afternoon. He had come down to see Milton. Alfred spent a good portion of the afternoon here. Then we had Tom Harrison call to see us, also Edna Dent and son, and just a few minutes ago Agnes and Parry Marriott left. They visited here over an hour, and now it is 11:15 p.m. Then between visits, Mother has been putting up apricots with a little assistance from me." July 25, 1944 MILTON MAURICE MARRIOTT Madeleine to Vern: "Mother, I and Jerry called in to see how Milton was about 1:30 P.M. this afternoon. Mother also took $25.00 down for Florence to use as she sees fit. Annabel is working as is Brent now. He is making $9.00 a day at the American Can Co. There aren't any doctor bills as the doctor hasn't been outonly last night-the first time in over two months. There is nothing he can doonly give prescriptions for stronger drugs, etc. Dad has ordered their coal for the winter. Florence says that Milton can't live much longer. One lung is filled with cancer and the other lung about half filled. The last few days he has been in terrific pain, but stronger drugs given to him this morning were giving him more relief. It seems so terrible he should have to suffer so. Just seems we can't stand to think of him having to go. He was just 45 years old last Saturday. But we can't want him to live and have to suffer as he is doing. The cancer growth started in his right lung and has gone to his left lung. Had it started in his left lung, he would have gone before now. We all talk as cheerful to him as we can and tell him he will soon get stronger. We want him to keep hopes up so that he can get well." July 26, 1944 Madeleine to Vern: "You say you know you can improve in conducting the Sacrament Meeting there. That is the right spirit, Honey. There is no one so perfect that can't improve. So you have the will, so you will find the way. Milton rests and sleeps better how since they have given him stronger drugs, so that is the only thing that can be done now. Pop (Harrop) looks fine as does your Mother. Mom told me to buy Pop some overalls, but I couldn't find his size so enclosed $1.50 in with his birthday card. I made a three layer cake for himthe bottom layer chocolate, the middle pink, and top white-then frosting and fine-colored candies on top. Mother and Dad are feeling pretty good these days though they feel so badly when it comes to thinking of Milton's condition. It make us all feel so depressed. He has suffered with pain so very much. We can see how he fails from week to week." July 28, 1944 Madeleine to Vern: "I told Florence today I would see that her ironing is done from now on and I can get Mrs. Thompson to help me. The last few days Milton has slept for hours under the stronger drugs. Just don't se how he can last much longer." July 30, 1944 |
