Show thrust his head out of the window calling to Dennis Sant and Richard Slater-'I'm going to school!' We are delighted he has Leone Johnson for his teacher (Budd's wife) at Mound Fort Elementary. We hope this is the beginning of happy years for him at school." September 14, 1953 SHIRLEY MARRIOTT MURDOCK Madeline writes: "Dearest Ida and family, While I am thinking of it, I want to tell you that Shirley was so anxious to have a Patriarchal Blessing. Now this requires is a recommend from your Stake President. Shirley apparently lives in a missionary district and travels about 25 miles to a ward to attend Church. She didn't know the Patriarch there. She said how much she wished Patriarch (William Arthur) Budge could give her a blessing while she was here. On the Sunday night of Mother Harrop's viewing, Brother Budge and wife came to the viewing. I talked to them a little, but Shirley talked to them for more than a half hour. They both remembered Shirley well. Patriarch Budge agreed to give Shirley a blessing and instructed her to have her Patriarch back there give her a recommend and forward to him. This night after she talked to Brother Budge, he gave a blessing to her at his home. Jerry and I attended with her. Well, he gave her a wonderful blessing. She said after how much it seemed that he knew all about her physical troubles. I asked her if she had talked at the mortuary about her illness and she said 'no'". I told her God prompts his servants to say the right things. Then, about three nights later, they came up to our home to bring Shirley's blessing rather than mailing it to her. They stayed and visited about an hour and a half. Vern was at home and our boys about half of the time. Shirley was to leave the following day. Brother Budge arranged, I know, that his secretary who types blessings would do this up especially so Shirley could have it to take home with her. Well, we all have our troubles and problems, but with you and I, I believe we inherited our parent's drive and will to be doing'. Money isn't everything though people in your and my circumstances find it plays a very necessary part where obligations have to be met with children's numerous needs. Money can't buy happiness. Doing for others is what brings happiness. What an unselfish Mother we had. What happiness she received in life was a by-product of doing first for her family and then for others. Yesterday, being Mother's birthday, Jerry and I took a bouquet of flowers up to the cemetery. If doesn't seem three years have passed since Mother passed on. How I wish she could have lived and been well enough to enjoy the scenery up here (1255 Henderson Dr.) We never tire of our view. I am not working at the school I worked at last year. I started there, but they were paying out too much for labor compared to the number of children enrolled. I am now working at Horace Mann school that Lowell attended last year. I can walk to and from school which is very convenient. I work only from 11 AM instead of beginning at 10 a.m. as I did last year. I could have worked steady this year at another school, but I wanted only part time work. Jerry has to be at school most of |
