Show grandchildren. As I was growing up, I realize what a remarkable, wonderful Mother I was blessed with. Although she was busy about her household duties, she was always joyful and pleasant to be around. Mother told me that when she was a young married woman, as time passed, she found that her husband had a temper. She acknowledged she had one, too. She came to the conclusion that to have a peaceful environment in their home that she would have to control her own temper. She developed a calm disposition, and if you have ever been in Madeleine's home this is the one thing that really struck me about that experience was the peace and the harmony and the good feeling. She possessed great patience, understanding and love, and she taught us by example-never rasing her voice in anger. Her children came to her for advice which was given in a thoughtful, loving, concerned way. Her life was filled with many challenges." After I read this last night, I thought of an experience that I had with Madeleine when we were driving some place one day. In her kind way instead of pointing the direction or telling anyone where to go she said: "May I make a suggestion?" I thought that was just her way. I think that if we all just listen we'll always be able to hear her voice in our mind's ear because she had a special tone in her voice and a very wonderful quality to her voice. But the way she used her speech was very uplifting, and she was always very understanding about other people and their problems and never critical. She was always looking for the good. When she wrote her mother's history, she also wrote about her Mother's sisters and the brother in the family. This is what she said about her Aunt, Jennie R. Farley Gibson: "As a niece of Jennie, I, Madeleine Marriott Harrop, remember her as a very gracious and beautiful person always particular and neat about her wearing apparel. She was always hospitable to her relatives and friends. She was an avid reader of the scriptures and other books pertaining to the LDS religion. She was extremely well-informed in various phases of the gospel. She exemplified to me faith, courage, determination, and a strong testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Jennie was quick to respond to the needs of her sisters and brother in their times of stress. There was a deep love and respect among these family members for each other. They were so refined in their talk and actions. Each of them benefitted from a good sense of humor, and they enjoyed the comical things that happened. They were truly beautiful examples to me." There were some words that Ida had placed in here, too, that I thought were really important about Aunt Jennie: "She was soft spoken, had a lovely speaking voice, and beautiful blue eyes. I never heard my mother's sisters argue with each other. |
