Show And of course one of those youthful lovers ended up being Vern Harrop and so that certainly prefigures the home life of the Harrops. I don't believe that I've met a more gracious woman than Madeleine Harrop and this sentiment in the second poem does not surprise me at all because I have spent so much time in the Harrop's home as you have, too. I think when Madeleine wrote this she probably was referring to the home that we're all thinking about when we're young-that's the home that we grew up in with our parents and siblings. But I think this poem prefigures the home that was to be with Vern and Jerry and Lowell, and I think on a third level as you listen to this particular poem it certainly prefigures what Madeleine may not have had in mind when she wrote this but that is the home where Madeleine finds herself today. HOME It's home the place that we love best For there the love of hearts abound; And here we find such peaceful rest, Ah! Here the thoughts of love are found. The wounds of life are healed here, The sorrows of years are cast away; At home sweet home no place for tears, Where dear ones give without repay. While roaming over land and sea, In every nook I chanced to roam; I find no place so dear to me. No place appeals like home sweet home. -Madeleine Marriott CAROL CHRISTENSEN STEWART, Remarks I'd like to thank Jerry, Lowell, and Ida for giving me this opportunity to say a few things about their wonderful mother and sister. All we would have needed to have done this day is to have read her obituary-that sums up what a great life she had. She certainly was a special daughter of our Heavenly Father. Three short years ago this same honor came to me when I was asked to say a few words at Vern's funeral. By way of review if you were not present at that time, Vern and Madeleine, Rudger and Edna Dent and Leslie and Vera Christensen, who were my parents, were all blessed to live in the Ogden 18th Ward together. They were part of the Elders |
