Show an incomparable physician. Dave diagnosed Dad with Alzheimer's a year before neurologists finally conceded to the fact, and earlier detected polymyalgia in Dad when there were only five cases in Utah. Besides professionally, he is family to us-having married our dear neighbor Margaret Sanford's daughter, Claire. We so enjoy Claire and her delightful sister Helen. Through Mother's last hospitalization, Dr. Dave was on the phone with Intensive Care at 5 A.M. every morning to check on her, in to see her before 9:00 A.M., and often at the hospital after 9 P.M. to check on her. Nurses and therapists at LDS hospital record there is no other doctor they have ever seen as caring and thorough with his patients as Dr. Dave-Claire, please convey our eternal thanks to him and to you also, Claire, for sacrificing many hours you could have had with him as he served countless hundreds. Out of respect and love for Dad, Mother returned to the Doctor with Dad so he would understand that if he married her they may never have children. Dad unhesitatingly expressed his love for Mother and his desire to marry her despite the circumstances. Later the doctors felt that Mother might be able to have children though the risk would be great. What a great blessing to be born to such loving, unselfish and devoted parents. We thank our dear parents for providing what I think was the closest to a near perfect home you could ever find. Though we faced dilemmas, challenges and occasional disagreements, there was always the overarching halo of love. It was a harbor of peace and a haven from the sometimes cruel world outside. Our home was truly a Heaven on Earth. Our Mother taught Jerry and me the value of work. She made it seem like a game. It seemed like fun to clean the house, yard, or whatever else needed to be done. Our parents instilled the values we have and for this we are ever grateful. Mother endured far more than I could ever endure. I think she endured the last six weeks for Jerry and |
