Program Description This program provides training to candidates interested in the application of disease and operation codes to episodes of care in the U.S. healthcare system. There currently is a nationwide shortage of qualified healthcare coders. Qualified coders are needed at all levels of the healthcare system to provide coded clinical data for reimbursement and research purposes. The program develops the ability of students to use the International Classification of Diseases, version 9 (ICD-9- CM) and version 10 (ICD-10-CM), and the International Classification of Diseases, version 10, Procedural Coding System (ICD-10-PCS) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Common Procedural Terminology (CPT) of the American Medical Association. The program develops expertise for both outpatient/office practice and acute-care inpatient levels of proficiency. Students will use and apply both coding schemes in the systems of reimbursement for healthcare services. Completion of all courses earns the student a Healthcare Coding & Classification Certificate and prepares them to sit for the American Health Information Management Association's Certified Coding Associate (CCA) certification examination.
