Show 33 services business and encouraging their growth. The second area has been the growth of what we call the materials businesses. Now, these materials businesses have been growing at a compounded annual rate of over the last few years of 14 percent. Again,... CARR: In earnings. JONES: ...in earnings, considerably faster than the overall corporate results or the national economy and here, too, our strategic planning has seemed to increase our attention to these businesses and we've allocated a disproportionate share of our resources to these businesses. I'm never at a loss to explain to people that if you talk materials there are two things you have to keep in mind. One, so many materials (not clear) trust to their finite supply and, two, almost every technological innovation that we make in this Company, and we still get more patents per year than any other company in the country, is materials limited. In other words, we're always faced with the problem of developing a material that can withstand ever, ever higher pressures, ever higher temperatures and so on. Or we're looking for materials that have special dielectric qualities or special ductility qualities and so on and it's this continuing . |
