58 ambassador to Australia at that particular point in time, one ambassador had left and another one had not been re-appointed, when I arrived in Sydney, I found that our local General Electric manager in Australia had set up a luncheon of a couple of dozen of the most prominent businessmen In Australia and I got off an airplane after flying all night and had an hour to shave and change my clothes and 1 appeared before this group and I was called on to give some comments on the economy of the United States and my own views as to what was happening to the economy worldwide. Well, this caught a little attention in the local press and when one of the reporters called our people and asked the purpose of my visit they didn't know why I was there themselves, so, you know, they were just sort of searching around for an answer and the reporter began to speculate that perhaps I had come to look the place over because perhaps I was going to be the next Ambassador from the United States to the Australian Government and I'll be damned if that didn't appear in the press.
