Show 58 ambassador to Australia at that particular point in time, one ambassador had left and another one had not been re-appointed, when I arrived in Sydney, I found that our local General Electric manager in Australia had set up a luncheon of a couple of dozen of the most prominent businessmen In Australia and I got off an airplane after flying all night and had an hour to shave and change my clothes and 1 appeared before this group and I was called on to give some comments on the economy of the United States and my own views as to what was happening to the economy worldwide. Well, this caught a little attention in the local press and when one of the reporters called our people and asked the purpose of my visit they didn't know why I was there themselves, so, you know, they were just sort of searching around for an answer and the reporter began to speculate that perhaps I had come to look the place over because perhaps I was going to be the next Ambassador from the United States to the Australian Government and I'll be damned if that didn't appear in the press. Well, it turned out to be a great cover. We visited the mines and left Australia without comment, obviously and then in December of 1975, Mr. Littlefield and I had done enough work and our |
