Summary Historically, spelling skills were highly valued and taught in schools using traditional methods that were direct and strategic. However, over the years many schools have abandoned spelling instruction altogether and started looking at non-traditional approaches such as a naturalistic approach. It has been argued and proven that explicit spelling instruction continues to be the most effective (Pan et al., 2021). Nevertheless, bothapproaches promote spelling competence and using a combination can be beneficial(Graham & Santangelo, 2014). The English spelling system is designed to represent both pronunciation and meaning. The spelling of most words can be explained once the comprehension of phonology, morphology, and etymology are interconnected. The claim that English is full of exception words that have to be memorized is a misunderstanding of the writing system. The spelling system is logical and incorporating the four major linguistic components in instruction is paramount. Students should be taught the logic of the English writing system. Spelling instruction can be designed much like instruction in other subjects that are studied scientifically (Bowers & Bowers 2017). Teacher linguistic knowledge benefits spelling instruction and increases students’ spelling gains (Carreker et al., 2010; Ehri & Flugman, 2018; McNewill, 2018; Pittman et al., 2022; Pittman et al., 2023; Pulliate & Ehri, 2018). Research shows that student literacy improvements are the result of the interaction between teacher knowledge and instructional practices (Carreker et al., 2010).
