Show LETRS based spelling curriculum 302 Diphthongs Note to teachers:Notice that this list has blendsand digraphs. Spelling List: ou ow irregular house down water mouth howl walk cloud clown together Day 1 Introduction to diphthongs ou and ow (2 minutes):When you hear /ow/ at the end of a word or syllable, use ow (cow, now, pow/er, show/er). When you hear /ow/ at the start of, or inside a word or syllable, use ou (ounce, house, loud). If the word rhymes with down (frown, clown, town) or owl (howl, towel, growl) we usually use ow. Watch youtube video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-6i0INcX40 pelling Dictionary Activity (3 minutes):Look atthe ou and ow word lists S in the Spelling Dictionary. Highlight the words that have digraphs. In a different color highlighter find the words that have blends. Are the ou and ow at the beginning, middle or end of the words? Notice most of the ow words end with ow except for the words that end with -own and -owl. onsonants and Vowels (5 minutes):Students will colorcode the C consonants and vowels for each spelling word. They will need a black and red writing tool. The teacher will guide the students on the whiteboard or smartboard with corresponding colored writing tools. Students will do this on the 3x4 Word Sort table found in the resources. Have students write consonants in black and vowels in red on the table. Write ou at the top of the first column in black. Write ow at the top of the second column. Write irregular at the top of the third column in black. Under the first column write the ou words (consonants in black and vowels in red): house, mouth, cloud. Under the second column write ow words (consonants in black and vowels in red): down, howl, clown. Under the third column write irregular words (consonants in black and vowels in red): water, walk, together. After writing all the words, recite each word, sound out each sound in the word, emphasize the diphthong sound. This activity helps students visualize the vowels and consonants in the words. |
