Protein and field both have consonant blends because the list has limited words to choose. Note that there are multiple syllable words on this list as well. Spelling List: ei ie ey protein thief key either field money ceiling cookie donkey Day 1 Introduction to long e vowel team ei, ie & ey (5 minutes):“Did you know there are 8 ways to spell the long e sound /ē/? Five ways to spell the long e sound are represented with vowel teams: ee, ea, ei, ie, ey. A vowel team is a combination of vowels that make one sound. This week we are going to learn 3 ways to spell the long e with vowel teams ei, ie and ey. Vowel teams occur most often in old Anglo-Saxon words whose pronunciations have changed over hundreds of years. This is why English spelling can sometimes be difficult because we have multiple ways to spell the same sound. They will need a black and red writing tool. The teacher will guide the students on the whiteboard or smartboard with corresponding colored writing tools. Students will do this on the 3x4 Word Sort table found in the resources. Have students write consonants in black and vowels in red on the table. Write the vowel team “ei = /ē/ at the top of the first column in red. Write the vowel team ie= /ē/” at the top of the second column. Write “ey = /ē/” at the top of the 3rd column. Under the first column write the ei words (consonants in black and vowels in red): protein, either, ceiling. Under the second column write the ei words (consonants in black and vowels in red): thief, field, cookie. Under the third column write the ey words (consonants in black and vowels in red): key, money, donkey. After writing all the words, recite each word, sound out each sound in the word, emphasize the /ē/ sound when reading the vowel teams. |
