Show LETRS based spelling curriculum 332 Words with -ild, -ost, -olt, -ind ote to teachers:Sometimes the vowel will be longand short with the same spelling N pattern. These words should all be short vowel if they are following the closed syllable rule. Notice that the word most has a long o and frost has a short o. The word wind has a short i while kind as a long i. Have students see the difference in the spelling dictionary and what is most common. This list has eight words instead of the usual nine. Spelling List: -ild -ost -olt -ind child most bolt wind mild frost molt kind Day 1 Introduction to words with -ild, -ost, -olt, and -ind (5 minutes): We're going to study words that end with -ild, -ost, -olt, and -ind. All these words are CVCC words, consonant vowel consonant words. These words look like closed syllables because the vowel is closed with a consonant. However closed syllables have short vowel sounds. However these words are what we call exceptions to the rule. We can also call the wild wild west words because most of these words do not follow the closed syllable rule. They will need a black and red writing tool. The teacher will guide the students on the whiteboard or smartboard with corresponding colored writing tools. Students will do this on the 3x4 Word Sort table found in the resources. Have students write consonants in black and vowels in red on the table. On the first column write -ild, child and mild. On the second column write -ost, most and frost. On the third column write -old, bolt and most.
