Spelling List: au aw irregular August yawn learn pause draw eight haul shawl school Day 1 Introduction to diphthongs ou and ow (2 minutes):Use au at the beginning or in the middle of a word. Use aw at the end of a word. If a single l, n, or k follows the /aw/ sound at the end of the word, use aw. Watch youtube video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uu4NBIp2cDY pelling Dictionary Activity (3 minutes):Look atthe au and aw word lists S in the Spelling Dictionary. Highlight the words that have blends. Are the au and aw at the beginning, middle or end of the words? Highlight the aw words that have an l, n or k after the aw. onsonants and Vowels (5 minutes):Students will colorcode the C consonants and vowels for each spelling word. They will need a black and red writing tool. The teacher will guide the students on the whiteboard or smartboard with corresponding colored writing tools. Students will do this on the 3x4 Word Sort table found in the resources. Have students write consonants in black and vowels in red on the table. Write au at the top of the first column in black. Write aw at the top of the second column. Write irregular at the top of the third column in black. Under the first column write the au words (consonants in black and vowels in red): August, pause, haul. Under the second column write aw words (consonants in black and vowels in red): yawn, draw, shawl. Under the third column write irregular words (consonants in black and vowels in red): learn, eight, school. After writing all the words, recite each word, sound out each sound in the word, emphasize the diphthong sound. This activity helps students visualize the vowels and consonants in the words. au aw irregular |
