You will learn many more ph words in the older grades in math, science and history such as geography, pharaoh, and photosynthesis. However kids in the lower grades also use ph words such as graph, phonics and elephant. The ph /f/ is found at the beginning, middle and end of words. The gh /f/ comes from old English or old German and used to have the German /ch/ sound but now the sound has changed overtime to the /f/ sound in English today. It’s amazing how language has changed so much over hundreds of years. The gh /f/ is only found at the end of words, unless it has an added suffix such as coughed. pelling Dictionary Activity (3 minutes):Look atthe spelling dictionary S together.
