Show LETRS based spelling curriculum 49 Curriculum Rationale ccording to the authors of the LETRS training manual Unit 3: Session 6 by A second grade the spelling component of a program should be separate from the reading component because some patterns and words that may be relatively easy for reading are much harder for spelling. Spelling can be extremely difficult in the English language because there are so many ways to spell the same sound. In Unit 4: Session 1 the LETRS manual states that proficient word study requires rapid recognition of all relevant layers of word structure in a mental process. Knowing a word well means being able to identify many aspects of language including its meaningful parts, syllables, graphemes, and phonemes (Moats & Tolman, 2019). This curriculum follows many of the LETRS research based spelling components and also meets Utah core spelling standards. Below are the rationales of the activities included in this curriculum. cope & Sequence:LETRS provides a K-2nd grade scopeand sequence for 1st-3rd S grade on page B2 and B3. This curriculum focuses on the 2nd grade recommendations and gives more details and organization about what will be taught. pelling Lists:The spelling lists are organized byskills being taught from the scope S and sequence. Each list will have 9 words and two word patterns or skills that relate to each other, as well as three irregular words. Some spelling lists will have a third word pattern instead of irregular words. Irregular words are chosen from the most common word list on page 211. The other words are chosen strategically. Introduction to lessons:It is important for studentsto have an understanding of the etymology (historical influences) of English words. LETRS manual (pg. 235) mentions that the English language amassed such a large vocabulary because of its history of adopting words (and their spelling) from many languages. Explaining the origin of language is another way for students to connect to words building on their orthographic mapping. Although etymology is more often seen in the older grades the authors of LETRS (pg. 237) explained that language of origin in Kindergarten through third grade has explanatory value. honological Awareness Activity:Phonological awarenessis a metalinguistic P proficiency that includes the ability to divide a word into spoken syllables, onset-rime segments, and individual phonemes. Evidence is overwhelming that explicit, direct teaching of phonological and phonemic awareness is one of the most critical elements for becoming literate, page 156 (Moats & Tolman, 2019). onsonant and Vowel Activity:When students have astrong understanding of C common syllable patterns such as closed, open, VCe, vowel teams, vowel-r , consonant-le it prepares them for longer multisyllabic word spelling. This activity allows students to visualize as well as listen to the vowels and consonants which is the foundation of learning syllables. See LETRS Unit 4: Session 3 for the syllable types. |
