Students will N learn consonant blends after they are introduced to vowel teams. Students will get more practice with vowel teams in future spelling lists with blends as well as other future lists. Spelling List: oo ou irregular food soup be moon you he boot youth she Day 1 Introduction to long u vowel team oo & ou (5 minutes):“Did you know there are 7 ways to spell the long u sound /ū/? The long u can sound two different ways: it can say /yoo/ like unicorn and /oo/ like ruler. Five ways to spell the long u sound are represented with vowel teams: oo, ou, ew, ue, ui. A vowel team is a combination of vowels that make one sound. This week we are going to learn 2 ways to spell the long u with vowel teams oo and ou. Vowel teams occur most often in old Anglo-Saxon words whose pronunciations have changed over hundreds of years. This is why English spelling can sometimes be difficult because there are multiple ways to spell the same sound. atch this video: W https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29YdXJSqsTs onsonants and Vowels (5 minutes):Students will colorcode the C consonants and vowels for each spelling word. They will need a black and red writing tool. The teacher will guide the students on the whiteboard or smartboard with corresponding colored writing tools. Students will do this on the 3x4 Word Sort table found in the resources. Have students write consonants in black and vowels in red on the table. Write the vowel team oo = /ū/ at the top of the first column in red. Write the vowel team ou = /ū/ at the top of the second column in red. Write irregular at the top of the 3rd column in black. Under the first column write the oo words (consonants in black and vowels in red): food, moon, boot. Under the second column write ou words (consonants in black and vowels in red): soup, you, youth. Under the third column write irregular words (consonants in black and vowels in red): be, he, she. After writing all the words, recite each word, sound out each sound in the word, emphasize the /ū/ sound when reading the vowel teams. This |
