Show LETRS based spelling curriculum 107 Vowel teams for long a: ei, eigh & ea ote to teachers:This spelling list does not includeirregular words because it covers N three different vowel teams instead. Also this spelling list does not include consonant blends. Students will learn consonant blends after they are introduced to vowel teams. The students will get more practice with vowel teams in future spelling lists with blends as well as other future lists. Spelling List: ei eigh ea vein eight bear reins neigh wear beige weight pear Day 1 Introduction to long a vowel team ei, eigh & ea (5 minutes):“Did you know there are 8 ways to spell the long a sound /ā/? Six ways to spell the long a sound are represented with vowel teams: ai, ay, ei, eigh, ea and ey. A vowel team is a combination of vowels that make one sound. This week we are going to learn 3 ways to spell the long a with vowel teams ei, eigh and ea. Vowel teams occur most often in old Anglo-Saxon words whose pronunciations have changed over hundreds of years. This is why English spelling can sometimes be difficult because we have multiple ways to spell the same sound. Watch this video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yScu13gw-P0 onsonants and Vowels (5 minutes):Students will colorcode the C consonants and vowels for each spelling word. They will need a black and red writing tool. The teacher will guide the students on the whiteboard or smartboard with corresponding colored writing tools. Students will do this on the 3x4 Word Sort table found in the resources. Have students write consonants in black and vowels in red on the table. Write the vowel team “ei = /ā/ at the top of the first column in red. Write the vowel team “eigh = /ā/” at the top of the second column. Write “ea = /ā/” at the top of the 3rd column. Under the first column write the ei words (consonants in black and vowels in red): vein, reins, beige. Under the second column write the eigh words (consonants in black and vowels in red): eight, weight, neigh. Under the third column write the ea words (consonants in black and vowels in red): bear, wear, tear. After writing all the words, recite each word, sound out each sound in the word, emphasize the /ā/ sound when reading the vowel teams. |
