Show LETRS based spelling curriculum 28 teach spelling-related components (Carreker et al., 2010; Ehri & Flugman, 2018; McNewill, 2018; Pittman et al., 2022; Pittman et al., 2023; Pulliate & Ehri, 2018). USBE has a goal to train all their early childhood educators with LETRS, starting in the fall of 2022 (Dickson, 2022). LETRS teaches evidence-based components necessary to teach both reading and spelling (Dickson, 2022; Moats & Tolman, 2019; Throndsen, 2023). Purpose The authors of the LETRS training handbook recommend that by second grade the reading and spelling components of a program should become separate because some patterns and words for spelling are much more difficult than for reading or vice versa. The LETRS scope and sequence for word study illustrates how reading and spelling expectations slowly diverge. Spelling mastery takes considerably longer, requiring a slower pace and more practice of word learning (Moats & Tolman, 2019). The purpose of this curriculum project is to develop a 2nd grade spelling program to align with the LETRS training that the state of Utah has adopted to meet the need of literacy training for early childhood educators. The objective of this program is to give 2nd grade teachers the tools to teach spelling using the science of reading principles. These science of reading principles align with the four components mentioned in the literature review: phonology, orthography, morphology and etymology. Teaching these spelling components explicitly and systematically is crucial for an effective spelling program. Method This curriculum project will provide 2nd grade teachers with a spelling program that is aligned with the LETRS training manual and consists of spelling lists, daily spelling exercises, irregular word practice routines, and orthographic mapping routines and tools. |
