Students will N learn consonant blends after they are introduced to vowel teams. Students will get more practice with vowel teams in future spelling lists with blends as well as other future lists. Spelling List: ai ay irregular rain pay to pain say two mail may too Day 1 Introduction to vowel team ai & ay (5 minutes):“Didyou know there are 8 ways to spell the long a sound /ā/? Six ways to spell the long a sound are represented with vowel teams: ai, ay, ei, eigh, ea and ey. A vowel team is a combination of vowels that make one sound. This week we are going to learn 2 ways to spell the long a with vowel teams ai and ay. Both ai and ay vowel teams make the /ā/ sound and are the most frequently spelled vowel teams for the long a sound. The other vowel teams that make the /ā/ sound are ei, eigh, ea, and ey.” The team ai is written in the middle of two consonants while the team ay is written at the end of the word. Vowel teams occur most often in old Anglo-Saxon words whose pronunciations have changed over hundreds of years. English spelling can sometimes be difficult because there are multiple ways to spell the same sound. They will need a black and red writing tool. The teacher will guide the students on the whiteboard or smartboard with corresponding colored writing tools. Students will do this on the 3x4 Word Sort table found in the resources. Have students write consonants in black and vowels in red on the table. Write the vowel team “ai = /ā/ at the top of the first column in red. Write the vowel team “ay = /ā/” at the top of the second column in red. Write irregular at the top of the 3rd column in black. Under the first column write the ai words (consonants in black and vowels in red): rain, pain, mail. Under the second column write ay words (consonants in black and vowels in red): pay, say, may. Under the third column write irregular words (consonants in black and vowels in red): to, two, |
