Show EDITORIAL SMOKING OK THE CAMPUS It's a well-known fact that certain students gather at what is called "Nicotine Paint" at almost regular inter¬vals. The mere fact that this is so obvious almost implies that the faculty condones this practice. In spite of the fact that "both school and city laws for¬bid youths under twenty-one years to have tobacco in their possession, they march back and forth behind our school, waving their smoking banners. Mr. Hopkins, superintendent of schools, has shown his greet disapproval to the extent that he would recommend the follow¬ing punishment: First offense: Reprimendation Second offense: Suspension Third offense: Dismissal. He added that this punish¬ment would be liberal as sus¬pension is possible on the first offense. The following interveiws will show what our fac¬ulty and student-body leaders think concerning this problem; Says Mr. Merrill; "It's a silly habit, and all investigations demonstrate that it is a very injurious habit for young people." Sgt. Ed. Halloway: "No young man should smoke unless he's twenty-one, and then it's a bad thing for him. Coach Moesinger declares: "Smoking is an expensive habit. It may or may not do harm to the individual. It definately makes you short-winded, and may or may not be disagreeable to people close by." Ray Stewart, student body president: "If a fellow's going to smoke, he should wait until he gets off the school grounds." Jenny Becker: "I don't think any of them are old enough to smoke anywhere!" Paul Lane: "In the first place, they aren't old enough. In the second place it looks bad for our school." Lieutenant-Colonel, Carl Yarrington: "As far as I see it, smoking on the campus should be entirely prohibited. They should be able to hold it until they get off the campus. Ray Pierson: "I consider it a "weakness" in anyone. If they can't at least hold them¬selves until they.leave the school grounds, they don't live up to my definition of a man." Jr. Class President, Claire Boyle: " I am against it." Mickey Whitney: "If a student has to be a "tough guy and smoke he might as well do it in front of everyone. Such a person is certainly a detriment to his school Lionel Chambers: "I think as Major Schoof thinks: |
