Show ATHLETICS IN HIGH SCHOOL If you take time to watch a group of small boys playing marbles or any other game, you will find that they are inter¬ested most of all in who is going to win. njhis desire to be so proficient at a thing as to be a winner stays with people throughout their lives. There has been a lot said about the value of athletics in high school. It seems the greatest amount of criticism is directed at the competitive angle. We are told that it is not most important to win but to play the game fairly, TO satisfy our urge for winning in any activity, the only field offered us is in athletic competition. When people say they are satisfied simply with a "moral" victory, we can't help but think that they are not being honest with themselves or us. When we leave school, we are going to meet with the severest kind of competition. No one will be there to help us. If we don't help ourselves, no one else will . And so it seems to me the most valuable lesson we can learn from athletics is this: to play the game; to play it hard; to play according to the rules, and to play for victory! Rodney Dunn SMOKING I believe smoking is divided into three sections: 1, a waste of time; 2, a waste of money; and 3, an injury to the body. A certain young lady made the following calculations during her study time at night. In the time she picked up the cigarette, inhaled, blew the smoke away so that she could see, she had lost several sec-onds. Counting the number of times she did this an evening, she found out that she wasted two hours study time a week! A young boy or girl smoking one package of cigarettes a day for twenty years, which is not very long for a smoker, will have spent $1,095. One thousand ninty five dollars would buy a car, pay the down payment on a house, or the expenses of a long trip. Smoking is not like alcohol. You do not feel the affects right away. But it will get you in the end. its motto is "Slow but sure!" Seventy five percent of our men are suckers . They spend much of their time smoking. How would you like to see women and girls not only smoking the poison, but also chewing and reeking with the stuff while they are baking pies and cakes? |
