Show Cherry - red Pyjamas (cont'd) flowed when, in Bill's new shiny roadster, they whizzed past Porky Lee and she saw his jaw drop open in amazement. But that was only the biginning. Bill took her for many rides, he took her skating, to shows, to church, and then one glorious day to the resort in the next town. First they went swimming. Penny's curls became straight as sticks, and she got almost enough sand in her hair to grow a rock garden; but she really did not care. They ate next at a little cafe, and then went gaily through all the concessions. He took her on the roller-coaster, holding her tightly as the car went twisting and turning down the steep inclines. Penny closed her eyes, held on for dear life, and enjoyed herself thoroughly. He took her down the water chutes, on the gas launch, and when the moon came out and the soft music began, to the open air dance pavillion. Penny was radiant, and unbelievably happy. It just seemed too good to be true. They waited the lovely pars nearby, when they had danced for awhile, then sat on the soft cool grass under the moon. He sang softly to her, and she noticed his fascinating manner of raising his left eyebrow. When he finished and looked at her expectantly, Penny said, "How do you raise your left eyebrow that way?" She held her right eye¬brow down and tried to lift the left one with her other hand. Bill gazed at her with shining eyes, and said simply, "You're sweet!" When they reached home, they sat on the steps for a moment. Bill said, "You are such an understanding person, Penny. Do you believe in love at first sight?" "Oh, yes," Penny answered happily. "Then you will understand how I feel. You see, there is a girl a very special girl." "Yes?" Penny's heart was beating so loudly that she was afraid Bill could hear it. "The first time I saw her I knew that she was the one and only one for me. And I am glad that she has a family like she does. You would make the nicest little sister a man could have." Penny was bewildered, hurt. He could not mean what he was say in . She thought that- "You you mean that " "Yes, you darling little girl, aren't you pleased? I mean that I love your sister more than anything in the world. I want to know if it is all right with you if she will marry me." Penny's world of joy erashedto little bits about her feet. Her heart seemed to sink like lead. Hot tears came to her eves, and she ran sobbing into the house. Porky Lee, through force of habit, pulled up in front of Penny's house, honked his make-shift horn, and leaned back to await results. Penny surely had been acting queer lately, with that black-haired guy always hanging around. She did not even seem to notice him since that guy showed up. What was the idea anyhow? Why, everybody knew that Penny was his girl! He grinned broadly at the sight of shining smiling Penny bounding down to the car. "Hello, Porky," she greeted him breathlessly. "Gee it's good to see you." "Hop in and we can go for a ride, "Porky ventured, carefully. Oh, id love to," answered Penny gratefully, as she climbed in. Porky was surprised, to say the least. Women surely were queer critters. Oh, well- The old car rattled off briskly in a cloud of dust. --Arlene Andrew |
