Show HAWAII IN APRIL (cont'd) April 29! I'll always re¬member that night, for that was the night of the Junior Prom. Huck was there with Mary. Eg and Pink and Mick were there. So was Tom and Dick and Harry-- Zake and Bud, too. That night was the night I met her April 29, at the Junior Prom! Stomo Ochi EROSION The snow and rain of the year have washed away much of the top soil of the land about the school, making little sullies and ruts, miniature Grand Canyons, through Ogden's future front lawn. This is a sample of erosion, erosion of the soil. The sidewalks have often been adhesive with clayish mud splattered over the surface, and the sight of them has been for from pleasing. Today, in us, erosion of a different form, character erosion, is taking: place. The rain of time has been washing away much of us, and some of us are left quite barren, shod of pride and ambition. Others of us have been merely cleansed of small grains of prejud¬ices arid preconceived misbeliefs, and have profited thereby. These of us have taken advantage of the rain and the snow, and have acquired plants of understanding, forgive¬ness, friendship, and numerous other desirable qualities to plant in the fertile soil of character. The roots of these plants are reaching deeper and deeper into the soil. Their fecundity in future years is almost a certainty. They are weathering light storms today, the real test comes in the future. The Editor WITH THE ST. LOUIS (BLUES) ORANGE AND BLACKS (Don Purkey writes a day by day account of the trip) March 28, Monday evening: After leaving the station we seemed kind of quiet and were all rather homesick although none of us would admit it. It's about three o'clock and very few asleep as yet. March 29, Tuesday: On the whole, a rather drab and boring day. We all were trying to find something to do and cards, checkers, find magazines were much in eveidence. Spent most of the day in Nebraska and of course a sand storm would have to show up. Couldn't see much of anything. March 30, Wednesday: Arrived in St. Louis about nine this morning. We posed for pictures to go in one of the papers . Went to the Hotel Majestic and rested and cleaned up till noon. We then went to the contest room in the Hotel Jefferson and listened to eight other choirs. After this we visited the stores and had lots of fun riding escalators up and down. We practised with Mr. Hansen after dinner, arid were supposed to attend a band concert afterwards, but we were too tired so we went to the hotel and. went to bed March 31, Thursday: Got up bright and early and sang our three concert numbers and sight-reading: in front of the judges. We went from there to practise with Nobel Cain for a few hours. We were all rather stunned with his appearance. Most of us had figured him to be old, white-haired, and cross, but he turned out to be a young- and "reg¬ular" guy. We had the afternoon to ourselves, so we went to the river front and explored one of the show¬boats. From there we crossed the river and entered Illinois. Tonight we practised some more after which we went to a very fine orchestra |
