Show DO YOU KNOW... By George Jensen That a small device which enables a physician to magnify the sound of the human heart 1000 times and to tune in on the particular heart sounds he wishes to hear has been developed? Watch out you romancing young people! That at present, the blind population of the United Stetes numbers approximately 114,000? That the world's population of blind peoole is estimated at 5,000,000? That what is believed to be the longest sentence ever written in any novel since the introduction of punctuation is contained in "Ulysses", by James Joyce. It is composed of more than 12,000 words? That El Teniente, Chile, possesses one of the most unusual copper mines in the world? That it is in a mountain and, as the entrance is at its base, the miners ride up--not down--to reach the various levels? That during the Age of Chivalry in Europe, when husbands and wives were not supposed to be in love with each other, many knights and ladies who were married to others entered into platonic partnerships called "love alliances." Strangely enough, these alliances were frequently solemnized by a religious ceremony and were harder to dissolve than regular marrages! That despite excellent identification work of the police, an average of 165 bodies of unknown persons are buried every 24 hours in the potter's fields of this country? That the death of Rudolph Valentino in 1926 affected more women than the passing of any other actor in history? Not only did several of them commit suicide at the time, but hundreds of thousands throughout the world formed local Valentino Memorial associations; many of them are still honoring his memory each year. Any and all contributions to this column will gladly be accepted. Contact either the editor, or Stomo Ochi. |
