Show My Pet Ambition Crusade Against Disease Crusade against disease! That phrase reminds one of medicine, of smells, sights, and sounds, of doctors and nurses, of combat more worthy than mere human struggles among humanity. Through the ages man has always dreamed of, thought of, and hoped-for bettering human¬ity—a worthy thought. Scott Gudmanson, sandy haired, genial athlete of the grid-iron., the diamond, and the quintetal floor, has a desire to enter West Point Military Acadamy. There he intends to study medicine and to become a brain specialist in the U. S. Army after graduating from the Acadamy. With his eouip- ment, supplies, and tr aining, Scott Gudmanson hopes to conquer diseases affecting the mind and brain of man. here is a future doctor, a scientist, who hopes and intends to better the human race! Scott Gudmanson is well Quali¬fied to succeed in fulfilling his ambition for he is a thinker, a lead¬er, a genial friend, one for whom responsibility and dependability are ol greater importance than the state-ment "I am for the people!" he is carrying five majors, gets good marks, and plays in all sports, an all-round athlete, year in and year out. West Point certainly ha something to look forward to! Stomo Ochi Smoking and Grades School grades of student smokers were probed recently. A special investigation conduct¬ed by Coach Moesinger's physiology classes revealed that C- or D+, a percentage of 69%, was the average grades of twenty-five High School students who smoke. Of the twenty-five boys' total grades, there were 13 incompletes, ten Fs, twenty-one Ds, twenty-eight Cs, thirty-four Bs, and only three As! The average grade for the school at large is approximately B-, Coach Moesinger declared. This is a percentage of about 83 per cent. This interesting survey reminds us of the fact that some of our students meet at regular intervals for a "whiff" at "nico¬tine point" (wherever that is!) The grades revealed above are those belonging to these boys of the Smokers Brigade. But, they do not reveal much other than mere figures. Whether the boys smoke because they do not have the intelligence to resist and to understand that smoking is harmful for the youthful body, or whether the boys' grades suffer as a result of their smoking are problems unsolved. It is an interesting question that waits to be solved by anyone who wishes to undertake the task. We only know that it is conceded by medical authorities, coaches, and doctors, that smoking is detrimental to the health of the growing youth. Stomo Ochi. |
