Show LETRS based spelling curriculum 50 honeme-grapheme mapping:LETRS (page 248) mentioned that this technique P came from the Grace program which allows students to see the functional relationship between phonemes and graphemes. Starting with speech sound awareness, it teaches the logic of English orthography in an explicit, sequential, multisensory, systematic way. Irregular word practice:The authors of LETRS claimthat a well-designed program introduces high-frequency irregular words 3-5 times per week along with regular correspondences and patterns (page 212). Irregular words are defined as words that do not follow letter-sound correspondences. They are also known as outlaws, exceptions, tricky, oddball, heart and red words. LETRS does not have a list of irregular words but did include the top 100 most common words in order of frequency, page 211. This curriculum used this list, but narrowed it down to irregular words.Multisensory techniques and visualization techniques should be used to practice these words. pelling Dictation Routine:LETRS (page 210) specifiesthat programs with a spelling S and dictation component are valuable. On page 287, LETRS states that proofreading tasks promote better self-monitoring during writing. Students should be held accountable for spelling all patterns that have been directly taught, as well as the select irregular words taught. pelling Dictionary Activities:Word sorting for patternrecognition is important for S reading and spelling. However each lesson only contains 6 spelling words to practice specific spelling patterns, that is not enough for students to see the bigger picture of words with similar spelling patterns. It is important for students to see a variety of other words with the same patterns and compare those with their small spelling list. The spelling dictionary gives many more examples of the same type of spelling patterns. A variety of activities can be done with the spelling dictionary to build on those skills learned in the weekly lessons. orting spelling words into word patterns:LETRS page178, Notice spellers can S make more sense of English if they are shown that certain graphemes are used in initial, medial, and final positions. Sorting words into patterns is a great way for students to see this. Sorting words with pictures connecting to words which gives meaning to words which is also another part or orthographic mapping. Students will later begin to learn more about morphology which is defining the smallest parts of words. tudents write their own sentences:Once again studentswill connect meaning to S their spelling words, another way to connect to the words, as well as more practice writing the spelling words in a meaningful way. I Spy game:This game is another way for studentsto come up with their own meanings or clues for words. This is also a speaking game so students may be able to use their phonemic skills to help them spell. yllable Lessons:Students begin to learn the differencebetween spoken and written S syllables. Understanding common syllable patterns is a powerful skill in spelling. There |
