Show LETRS based spelling curriculum 244 Vowel-r Combinations, Single Syllables ote to teachers:TheLETRS authors decided on callingthis syllable vowel-r syllable N instead of r-controlled. The reason is because the vowels make a variety of sounds. The vowel-r is a difficult skill to master because of its articulatory feature, as well as the numerous and variable spellings. Many vowel-r words make the same sound like ar, er, ir, or and ur. The most common spelling is with the er and least common is with the ir. Unfortunately there is not a rule to help decide if a word is spelled with ar, er, ir, or and ur. Exposure to many vowel-r words and sorting r-vowel words into common spelling patterns is the best practice. These lessons focus on single syllable words so students can focus on one vowel sound.
