Show Obituary Donald Lloyd Cope passed away on December 30, 2008. He was born May 16,_ - 1936 in Kansas City, Kansas to Lloyd Cope and Gladys Calhoun Cope. Don moved to Ogden, Utah at the age of one year old and remained a lifelong resident of Ogden until _ his death. He attended the public schools of Ogden, graduating from Ogden High School in 1954. He attended and graduated from Weber State University majoring in — Police Science and Sociology. Donald Cope began his professional career with the Ogden City Police Force as the Spokesperson/Community Liaison. Donald went on to serve the state of Utah with The Consumer Trades Commission. He was appointed by ~Governor Norm Bangerter as the first Black Ombudsmen for Community Affairs. He _ also worked at the Clearfield Job Corps as a Residential Advisor. Throughout nis career he received many awards of distinction and distinguished service. Donald Cope accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Embry Chapel A.M.E. Church of Ogden, Utah. However, he later joined Calvary Baptist Church in Salt Lake City and has been an ardent Deacon and a member of the Calvary Male Chorus for many years until his health prevented him from participating as fully as he desired. / Mr. Cope was an active participant of civic community. He was instrumental in involving minorities and Boy Scouts of America. He was a ‘member of Blacks in Government, and and social conditions a member of the Fraternal Brotherhood an adventurous traveler. Don enjoyed cooking and could bake a pound cake that would be the envy of Martha Stewart. Ordinary was not in his vocabulary, he prided himself in his approaching life’s challenges head on and dealing. with them. Don had a great sense of humor and his many “one-liners” were always on target. His family remembers his great compassion, gentlemanly manner, and interest -shown to children and grandchildren. Don had an extraordinary special way with animals. He loved and doted on his two special pals till the very end, Ozzie and Precious. | He is preceded in death by | his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Cope, his mother-inlaw, Mrs. Annie Mathews, grandson, Isaiah Cope (Baldorama) and a son, Andrew Wayne Phillips. He is survived by his devoted wife, Belle Cope, son, Marcel Cope (Ju’Nare) Ogden, Utah. Stepdaughters, Antoinette Goodie, Los Angeles, California and Roslyn Haywood, Las Vegas, Nevada. Grandchildren: Nicholas, Adrian, Mckenzie, Ke’Airra, Stephanie, Amber, Jennifer, Jason, Leontra. Six great grandchildren. Brother, James Cope of Oakland, California. He leaves to mourn his passing many relatives and friends too many to mention in this brief. The family would like to thank the staff of Ogden Regional Medical Center, with special thanks to Dr. Harry Senekjian and Chris Anderson. Many thanks also to the many caring and compassionate friends and pastoral staff and members of Calvary Baptist Church who befriended Don in his many years of illness.
