REGIMEN SANITATIS SALERNITANUM The name of the famous School of Salerno has for the most part been kept alive by the collection of hygienic rules in rhyme known as the Regimen Sanitatis Salernitanum. Although the school itself dates back to the ninth century, the poem was first published about 1480. Since then there have been almost 300 varying editions, with translations from the original barbarous Latin made into many languages. In general, authorship is considered to have been composite or the work of one John Milan. Be that as it may, for three centuries it served as a medical handbook for the laity, and the ageless common sense advice it gives will be readily discernible after a reading of the following pages on which a selected number of the verses appear.
