Show 8 May, Friday. JAMES LIND (1716 to 1794) A native of Scotland, James Lind is known as the father of nautical medicine. He served as surgeon in the Royal Navy, and as physician to the Royal Naval Hospital at Haslar. He advocated the distillation of water aboard ship; antiscorbutic measures and the use of cinchona as a prophylactic in malaria; he also stressed the importance of diet, general comfort and ventilation. Three epoch making treatises on scurvy, naval hygiene and tropical medicine keep his reputation alive. Saturday, May 9.
