Show 20 May, Wednesday. SIR GILBERT BLANE (1749 to 1834) During the naval career of Sir Gilbert Blane, the health of the British Navy improved greatly. His powerful influence brought about the enactment of reforms which Lind and Trotter had fought for in vain. He made careful experiments in artificial food preservation, initiated the collection of medical data in the navy, and labored to advance the cause of preventive medicine.
