TRANSPORT OF THE WOUNDED The simple, old fashioned way of transporting the wounded has always been that of carrying by hand. An early unit to convey the sick and wounded was the so called Rossbahre or horse barrow. It was a rather crude stretcher with long poles extending before and behind, to which horses could be hitched.
