3 June, Wednesday. 2nd This afternoon D.U. a Pioneer group met here to consider the renting of part of Pioneer Hall for a nursery to care for small children whos mothers work on Federal projects as hundreds are now doing. Mr Lawerence met with us later at the Hall & was interested. I was made Chairman of the Committe to continue on. Dr & I drove to Salt Lake City on business conserning Oscar being retained at Blind School. I bought a gift of six stirling Teaspoons for Edward R McKay & wife Lottie Lund. Gift from Royal & Cleone, Dr & I. Had a nice dinner at Utah Hotel. WILLIAM P.C. BARTON (1786 to 1856) The Continental Congress organized the U.S. Navy in 1775; and a Secretary of the Navy was appointed in 1798. The Bureau of Medicine and Surgery was established in 1842. Selection of the first Chief of this Bureau was made form the sixty surgeons then in the Navy, and resulted in the appointment of Surgeon William P.C. Barton. He was of unquestioned influence in the direction of medical reform and sanitary improvement during the early years of the Navy. Thursday, June 4. Oertel came to see the Mdse. I brought from South & Central America we also went thro an old trunk which I bought with the first money I ever earned. My father being in the butcher buisness he gave me all surplus fat & I rendered it out in a big kettle outside in the yard & put it in six qt pans when set & cold could pile one on top of the other. These he sold for me & paid me 13.00 cash. As I had five brothers younger than I the trunk took good care of most of the things so vital to me at the age of 13 yrs. Mrs Rate died we called & left flowers. Dr has served the family 40 yr or more.
