JAMES TILTON (1745 to 1822) 1813 saw the first appointment to the post of Physician and Surgeon General as it is now know. Thus, with James Tilton, began the history of the U.S. Medical Corps. His Economical Observations on military Hospitals and the Prevention and Cure of Diseases Incident to an Army is a contribution of permanent value on this subject. In it, Tilton has recorded painstakingly and intelligently the medical and surgical care of the sick and wounded during the War of Independence. Tuesday, May 19.
