27 March, Friday. Oertels 47th birthday. Dr, Oertel & I drove to Salt Lake City to attend the funeral of Alice McLachlan Rich 73 yr old. Widow of Ben E. Rich. She died the 24 of Strok. Services were very fine and splendid remarks were made of her by Joseph Fielding Smith of the Twelve Apostles also her Bishops. We returned home early and I prepared a nice dinner for Oertel & family. WOMEN IN WAR Women have always taken part in the care of the sick and wounded during wars. In the armies of the Swiss Confederacies they served as canteen women, washed, cooked and had the care of the wounded. How these women gave assistance to the incapacitated on the battlefield is shown in an old picture, The Battle of Sempach, by Hans Rudolf Manuel Deutsch (1551), a section of which is here illustrated. Saturday, March 28. I have spent today cleaning dish cupboards in the breakfast room & kitchen. Dr and I called to see Cleone some better. We read every evening when at home which is most of the time. The L.D.S. Church adopts policy of limiting mission work to Seventies and High Priests due to problems set by War. Good and evil are rewarded at last though we travel far and fly high there is still no escape CHINESE PROVERB Church Adopts Policy Due to Problems Set By War SALT LAKE CITY, March 28 Missionary service for the Latterday Saints church will be confined during the war to members of the church who hold the office of seventy or high priest. Announcing that policy, the first presidency of the church said it was adopted because the world wide disaster in material and spiritual matters has brought vital and difficult problems to the nation and to the church. The first presidency asked that bishops recommend for missionary work only persons who are either seventies or high priests and furthermore, none but those who are and have been living worthily . . .Persons who have received or expect to receive notice of induction under the selective service law should not be recommended, the first presidency added.
