Show Life’s Reflections Mother Bernice Hicks Tooks LAYTON — Mother Bernice Hicks Tooks was born September 29, 1929, to Mr. Horace Hicks and Mrs. Alberta Hunter Green in Stephens, AR, Ouachita County. Mother Tooks was called to her heavenly home on August 3, 2007. As a young child, Bernice became a member of St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church of Stephens. There she assisted her mother in the Church throughout her youth. She attended the Stephens Public Schools and Shorter College, an AME Institution of Higher Learning in No. Little Rock, AR. Bunny, as she was fondly known by numerous friends and relatives, has a lovely family of four children. Possessed of an enthusiastic energy of lesser years and failing health, she remained faithful and interested in all things around her, especially regarding Church activities. After relocating to Ogden, UT she united with Second Baptist Church and served in the Mother's Group (The Golden Girls), Guiding Light Circle, Missions, Sunday School and because she was a gourmet cook, she organized and became founder of “The Kids Meal” done after Sunday school and prior to Morning Worship each Sunday. Her life was one of dedication to God, to her family and to her craft. Mother Tooks was predeceased by her parents; husband Marion Tooks; sister Mrs. Agnes Carol Green Polite; and two brother's Jerry Green and Albert (Buddy) Hicks. She leaves to cherish her memories two daughters, Sheree Danell Lee (Robert) and Teresa Wright both of Clearfield, UT; two sons, Claude L. Hayes, Jr., Layton, UT and Orlando Hayes, Ogden, UT; six sisters, Mary Helen Dockery (Olies) Roy, UT, Anna Burnett Graham (Morris), Magnolia, AR, Queen E. Dorby (Andrew), Ogden, UT, Myrtle L. Thurston (William,deceased), Wake Village, TX, Barbara Hicks Viltz, Atlanta, GA, Gloria Colvin, Phoenix, AZ; five brothers, Alvin (Pete) Hicks, CA, Esther Green, Jr., SLC, UT, Elder George R. Green (Julia), Roy, UT, Darnell Green (Shari) Sioux City, IA, Rudolph Tooks, Stephens, AR; a special mother, Mrs. Thelma Green, Ogden, UT; one uncle, Dr. William Henry Hunter, Little Rock, AR; one cousin, raised as a sister, Ruby J. Hester, Ogden, UT; Claude Hayes, Sr., Oakland, CA, a devoted long time friend; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.
