JAN YPERMAN (1295 TO 1351) This Flemish surgeon was the great authority on surgery in the Low Countries during the fourteenth century. A pupil of Lanfranc, he upheld his masters teaching, especially in regard to ligation and torsion of the arteries. Yperman was the author of two surgical works in Latin, much read by contemporaries.
