Show 21 September, Monday. dont do much but get meals and keep house Dr & Heber are quite buisy. Keep up on News reading pretty well as Dr and I seldom go out in the evening THE DOCTORS LAST FEE Rarely do paintings depict scenes in which someone is paying the doctor. It remained for the brilliant English caricaturist, J. Rowlandson, to do this in a sketch entitled, The dying Patient, or Doctors last Fee, part of which is here reproduced. The doctor in the picture plays a sorry part. With the look of a repentant sinner, he furtively leaves the death chamber, not without first having a last guinea slipped into his hand. Tuesday, September 22. Have spent the day sewing and knitting. He is a happy man who has simplified his tastes to the point where a good book and a free and quiet evening are for him not a chore, or a sign of increasing age, but a preference and a badge of wisdom and distinction SIR JOSIAH STAMP.
