19 October, Monday. A buisy morning as usual. Do not get up early as I am a poor sleeper so since we are alone Dr gets his own breakfast and I do without. I prepare our big meal at noon so Dr Hancock who is a partner with Dr and Carol our grand daughter who is attending Weber College has dinner with us. we live on same block as College & have for over forty years. This afternoon Earnest & Emily Schettler came from Salt lake City to visite with me and to see my memory books. She is a second cousin and was with me on my wedding day also attended B.Y.C. togather. MISTAKEN AESCULAPIAN SYMBOL The double serpent entwined staff of the god of commerce, Hermes or Mercury, has been wrongly considered to be the Aesculapian symbol. Johan Froben, Swiss medical printer, first used this symbol, similar in design, but he may not have attached any medical significance to it. However, it was adopted by Sir William Butts, and later by John Caius. It seems to have fallen into disuse in Great Britain, but in the United States it is still much, though erroneously, regarded as the true Aesculapian staff. Tuesday, October 20. Our second oldest living G. son Richard B. Rich is fifteen yr. old today. he is living with Avon and June Smart (aunt & uncle) at Oakdale for this winter as his father Dr Thair C. Rich is in War service. Richard is in high school a fine big fellow and is six feet tall. I sent him a book compiled by Nibley for the L.D.S. church. Attended Relief Society in 5 Ward. Opening Lit. lesson given by Lydia Burrows on Lit. of the Bible which will continue once a month thro the year. Good attendance and fine lesson. Evening spent in reading.
