Show Holiday festivities brightened the winter landscape in our city in December. Christmas lights glowed from and around houses and reflected on the snow-covered land. It is a time of cheer, well-wishing, compassion, love, good-will, and sharing. In addition to the many individual parties and gatherings, many residents were involved in city sponsored activities. Our Council-at-large, Scott VanLeeuwen, gave us a Christmas Message in the December issue of The Pioneer Post. He expressed his gratitude that he can live in such a friendly, nice community, and that it is a great community. He also encouraged us to enjoy our parks and other amenities our community offers, and to realize what a choice place it is. He also thanked everyone who plays a part in making this a great city, and wished all of us a wonderful holiday season. About 40 city residents enjoyed a CERT party on December 3, 2009, at the city building, under the direction of Dixie Little. A dinner, catered from Maddox was served. Drawings for prizes were held and games were played. Tammy Folkman, from the Sheriff's office, spoke on disaster planning. She encouraged residents to take the CERT training, and gave upcoming dates for the classes. Santa Claus visited Marriott-Slaterville City on Saturday, December 12, 2009, from 9:00 to 11: a.m. at the Senior Center. About 125 people took the opportunity to have breakfast, participate in activities, and visit with Santa. The breakfast featured ham, scrambled eggs, pancakes, cold cereal, donuts, fruit, hot chocolate, milk, and juice. Paula Okey Hansen told a Christmas story. Lucky children won prizes at Bingo. Santa also visited with all who wanted to see him, and gave each a package of candy. Shauna and Stacee Meyerhoffer were in charge, with many helping elves. A Christmas party was held following the December 17, 2009, City Council meeting. The City Council, Planning Commission members, staff, community volunteers, and their partners, were invited to attend. A Maddox dinner, with the choice of chicken, turkey steak, ground beef or country fried steak, was served with a baked potato, green salad, and roll. The meal was very much enjoyed, as well as the opportunity to visit with old friends and new associates. Thanks go to Becky Burt and her helpers for another fine event. History Project Weber State University began the project of digitizing the nine volume yearly Marriott-Slaterville History and the 15 volume Monthly Histories. Several oral history video interviews and historic photographs were also included. In December, Jamie Weeks from the Weber State Stuart Library at Weber State University, reported to the council on our community history work with which she has been involved. Originally it was proposed that Weber State University would digitize the city history and transcribe the community history at a cost of $10,000.00, with a state grant and the city each paying half of this cost. Subsequently, the city was denied the state grant. Weber State felt that the city's collection was so important that Mrs. Weeks met with Mayor Keith Butler and City Administrator Bill Morris and proposed that they would do all the work for $2,500.00. The project began June 8, 2009. It took two Weber State staff members six months to complete the work. She said the work was a joy to complete for her staff and is a very entertaining and impressive history. She presented the collection of DVDs and transcriptions to the city council. All individuals who were interviewed and video taped concerning their histories and memories, were each given a DVD and copy of their transcribed history. The collection was received by the council with sincere thanks, at the December 17, 2009, meeting. The digitized collection will become part of the Mountain West Digital Library, and will be available on www.mwdl.org, and the WSU Digital Collections website. Awards The October issue of The Pioneer Post reminded us that it was time again to nominate others in the community for the annual community awards. This is residents' opportunity to recognize someone in our city for going above and beyond as a neighbor, business, contributor, leader or volunteer. The categories are: The Good Neighbor Award-a neighbor or business that is an exemplary example. Elna Lucas Community Culture/History Award-a person who has contributed to our local community history and culture during the year. H. Orvil Holley Youth Leadership Award-any youth who has shown outstanding leadership. 16 |
