Blair claims State Am title Quick-hitting teenager tops Sutton By BRADY BINGHAM Standard-Examiner staff bbingham@standard.net LAYTON — Zac Blair wanted nothing more than to follow in the footsteps of his father. For three years the former Fremont High School star and BYU freshman grinded at the Utah State Amateur for his chance to put his name alongside his dad Jimmy Blair, who won the prestigious tournament in 1973. All week, the gallery compared father to son in their pace of play, their jittery demeanors and their confidence on the golf course. On Sunday, the two had the opportunity to compare victory speeches, as Zac Blair defeated Alex Sutton in the 36-hole championship match 5 and 3 at Valley View Golf Course. "This was my goal. I knew I could play with these guys and I have won a couple times this year," he said. "It's amazing (to win). It feels great. "It was my goal all year and I did it." On several opportunities Zac credited Jimmy for getting him ready to win this championship. "My dad taught me right. Good fundamentals get you a long way," admitted Zac, who at 5-foot-6, 120 pounds gets everything out of every swing he takes. "He always said, 'Be as consistent as you can ... down the middle and on the green. That's how you win.'" Zac's accuracy throughout the grueling five-day tournament played a big role; that and to an extent his speedy pace of pay.
