Show Marriott-Slaterville City History September 2009 Autumn began this month, although the weather has continued to be warm and summer-like. Leaves began to put on their fall colors, with the ever-present orange barrels, cones, construction signs and equipment blending in. Alt roads in our community and those connecting it with others seem to have erupted this year with these emblems of road improvements. They seem to bear the message: "Patience is required." Both the City Council Meeting and the Planning Commission Meeting were cancelled in September 2009. The staff and the construction committee were busy with meetings with UDOT. Little has been accomplished with the construction on 12*1 Street recently, as UDOT pulled the crews assigned to that work for 8 weeks, and assigned them to a construction project on Highway 89, in Davis County. Businesses on 12th Street have suffered greatly with loss of business during this reconstruction. Travel is frustrating, difficult and slow for those that must use the street, with only one lane in each direction. It is doubtful that the project will be completed by the previously projected date of October. Plans for the reconstruction of 400 North are proceeding. JUB has completed the design plan for the construction. CRS is the engineering firm who handles the management of the construction, which they expect to take place between March 1 and July 31, 2010. The city staff will soon be meeting with property owners to get easements and permits. The sidewalk project from 400 North to the Pioneer Elementary School is ready. Central Weber Sewer Improvement District hopes to complete its road construction this month, finishing 2800 West first and then Pioneer Road. Residents will be detoured from Pioneer Road via the new 2800 West for approximately three days for road replacement. The September 2009 issue of The Pioneer Post, reminded residents that a municipal election will be held in November 2009. The candidates appearing on the ballot are: Mayor, Keith H. Butler; East District: Delbert F. Hodson; West District: Kim R. Slater. Any write-in candidate must register their intent to run with the city recorder as provided in the Utah Election Law. The Utah Election Law requiring every voter to provide valid voter identification was explained in detail in this issue, as the state requires enforcement of this law. This proof must be provided even if the voter is personally known by the poll worker. Valid identification includes one of the following: Utah driver license, ID card issued by the state or U.S. government, Utah concealed weapon permit, U. S. Passport, or Tribal ID card. Alternatively, two sources of single source documents that show identity and residence within the voting precinct can be used. A record of the type of documents presented is entered in the Official Register. If the voter is unable to provide sufficient proof, the voter is required to use a Provisional Ballot, and provide valid identification to the County Clerk within five days of the election for the ballot to be counted. The city scrap metal clean-up drive continued in September. Work also continues on the park at the city offices. Our city was among those affected by a power outage that occurred on September 16, 2009, shortly before 2:00 p.m. It affected about 58,000 Weber County households and businesses. Fortunately, it lasted less than an hour, but showed residents and businesses how dependent we are on electricity. An accident occurred on September 21, 2009, at the intersection of 1900 West and Pioneer Road. A dump truck and a semi-trailer collided, and the dump truck turned on its side spilling a load of rocks on the side of the road. 163 |
