Show A "Coming of Age Conference 2009" Ready, Set...Revitalize!, sponsored by the Weber County Organization for the Elderly, was held on April 29, 2009, at the Ogden Marriott Hotel, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. It was for anyone interested in lifestyles of people 50 and older. Other sponsors were Gardens Assisted Living, Mountain Ridge Assisted Living, and Comfort Keepers. May is Stroke Awareness Month and the McKay Dee Hospital Center held stroke education and screening on May 19, 2009, at the Marriott-Slaterville Senior Center. A Bone Density Screening was held on June 9, 2009, at the Senior Center, sponsored by the McKay-Dee Senior Health Connection. Their newsletter also gave information on what we need to know about sun safety. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, but it is preventable because over 90% of all skin cancers are caused by exposure to UV radiation from the sun's rays. We should protect ourself from intense sunlight by staying in the shade as much as possible, wearing sunglasses, a hat, proper clothing, and using appropriate sunscreen. The McKay-Dee Senior Health Connection Newsletter for July gave ideas for getting "Brain Healthy." They included snacking on almonds and blueberries instead of candy, ballroom dancing, walking, volunteering as a host at local organizations, to leave your comfort zone, get support for stressors, eye exercises, read the news, join a book club, tour your neighborhood, take college classes, or attend educational events. Solve games such as crossword puzzles or Sudoku. A challenge to name popular figures, Blast From the Past, was printed as a challenge to seniors. A cholesterol/blood glucose screening was held at the Senior Center on July 14, 2009. In the August issue of The Pioneer Post, Shauna Meyerhoffer, director of Senior Services, explained the activities currently available at the Senior Center. A Tuesday lunch is offered each week at 11:30 a.m., to seniors age 60 and older. A monthly dinner is provided on the third Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. A nurse comes to the last week of the month lunch to take blood pressure. Other health services are also provided quarterly. Each Thursday at 10:30 a.m. a Line Dance class is held. Carolyn Deru holds weekly Yoga sessions also on Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. There is a library with books to check out, and computers to use, with internet access. These are great opportunities for all our senior citizens. Senior Companions who are healthy adults over the age of 55, are needed to help other adults live independently. Qualifying persons receive a stipend of $2.65 per hour and mileage reimbursement. On November 3, 2009, members of the Weber County Sheriff's Department served the Senior lunch. They introduced those in attendance from the Sheriff's staff, and gave important advice on Protecting Your Privacy. Keeping an Eye on Your Private Information. The McKay-Dee Senior Health Connection Newsletter for December 2009, gave information to seniors about preventing falls and what a person can do to be safer from falls. ***** What an eventful year! So much slips by unnoticed unless it directly affects oneself. In reality, community affairs, actions and history do affect everyone. Let us remember and appreciate these things which reflect in our lives. 18 |
